The Street Preacher’s Charter

Yesterday, The Christian Institute launched the Street Preacher’s Charter and OAC GB were proud to be one of the organisations to endorse it.  It is a new resource for Evangelists so that they know their rights and responsibilities when preaching on the streets.  The Charter outlines key principles illustrated by extracts from the law and real-life scenarios.  It demonstrates how the law operates, and the responsibilities of both the police and street preachers.

Good Practice

In the foreword, former Director of Public Prosecutions Lord Macdonald of River Glaven KC writes how “delighted” he is to endorse the Charter, noting how it aims “to encourage good practice” as well as give “an overview of relevant laws”.

Christian Institute Director Ciarán Kelly commented: “Drawing on our many years assisting responsible Christian street preachers, it aims to help preachers and police officers alike to better understand and uphold the law.”

OAC GB National Director, Steve Harris, said: “We were pleased to endorse the Street Preacher’s Charter.  As well as clearly explaining the law around street evangelism it also encourages good practice from street preachers.  This good practice is something that we have always emphasised to our Evangelists and in all of our training.”

Rights and Responsibilities

The Street Preacher’s Charter sets out the law and seeks to simply answer a number of questions that street preachers have.  Questions such as:

  • Are there any restrictions to my freedom of religious speech?
  • When can a police officer arrest a street preacher?
  • What can I say when preaching on the street?
  • And many more…
